January 2008

An early finish at work allowed me time to visit the Glasgow Science Centre / SECC area on the 3rd January and it was a bitterly cold afternoon. The Irn Bru Carnival provided a bit of colour to contrast with the dark grey skies. Unfortunately the river was low so chance to get a good image of the Waverley was docked by the Science Centre.

One of main reason for visiting the Glasgow area was to try out my new Gorillapod which is remarkable effective in the urban environment.

Despite been loaded with cold I need to get out of the house for a while and headed into Paisley for an hour on the 6th. It was a very wet day with only an hour without the heavy rain. I photographed Paisley Abbey, the Anchor Mill and the town centre.

On the 10th I made two trips into Glasgow the first to the Glasgow Botanical Gardens in the morning before returning in the early evening with my local camera club to take some night shot of the city.

With heavy rain all morning and afternoon the botanical gardens were a great venue, the glass houses and newly restored kibble palace was full of colour and provided me with an opportunity to improve my macro photography.

The evening session started by visiting the launch of ABC Photography at the Mussel Inn, Glasgow before heading towards the Mitchell Library and the M8 woodland Road footbridge for car trails.

The 16th was a rather grey start to the day, but for once it was not raining, making the most of a day off I headed off on the short drive to Clyde Muirshield Regional Park. The light was very poor and spent most of the time photographing the waterfalls. Not a great deal of wildlife seen, only Buzzard, Kestrel, and Raven note out on the moor, along with some common woodland birds on the visitor centre trails.

Later in the afternoon I headed down to Ardrossan hoping for one of those killer sunsets, unfortunately it fizzled out. Oystercatcher, Mallard, Shelduck, Meadow Pipit and Pied Wagtail all seen.

With heavy rain moving in from the west on the 22nd I planned to travel east to the Forth Railway Bridge for sunrise, but got stuck in bad traffic and could see the bright red sunrise fade into a mood grey skyline by the time arrive at Queensferry. It was my first chance to the bridge close up having only previously seen it while travelling over the road bridge, the sheer size of the structure is incredible. Wildlife wise a few redshank, oystercatcher, curlew, and gulls where seen along with common woodland and garden birds on nearby paths. On the way back I called in at Edinburgh Zoo for a couple of hours, the light was very poor. I visited ‘Rainbow Landings’ a new interactive walk-through rainbow lorikeet exhibit which is home to about of these 40 beautiful birds.
